Communities Promoting Reading, a New Jersey 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to advancing intergenerational literacy and wellness. Since its inception in 2018, the organization has created, funded, and coordinated literacy activities for families in both New York and New Jersey. In response to COVID-19, the organization adapted its mission to further emphasize intergenerational literacy and wellness.

We have established a collaborative network with various private and public partners, such as Raymour and Flanigan, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Englewood Public Library, the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, Medgar Evers College, and the School of Professional Studies Summer Youth Employment program. These partnerships have significantly amplified the impact of our family literacy initiatives. Notably, these collaborations resulted in a 25% increase in high school equivalency rates among adult students in Brownsville in 2019 and a 20% increase in library card registrations in Bergen County, New Jersey in 2024.

Communities Promoting Reading is a subcontractor with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Equity and Community Engagement. As a subcontractor, organizational staff receive ongoing training and guidance to manage and disburse grant funds while ensuring community partners are connected with the community's needs. The organization coordinates health literacy and wellness activities with Putnam County partners to support Putnam County families. Through these efforts, Communities Promoting Reading aides Putnam County families in accessing and understanding health. 

The organization's capacity to efficiently allocate resources and connect families and stakeholders with relevant support systems in both rural and urban communities demonstrate our commitment to promoting literacy and wellness for all.
